Ripon, North Yorkshire

Ripon, North Yorkshire, is one of the smallest cities in the country and is sometimes dubbed the "Cathedral City of the Dales". The city of Ripon is very old and dates back some 1300 years when the original settlers moved here to form a religious settlement near the convergence of the River Skell and the River Ure as we know them today.
Ripon's most striking building is the cathedral which dates back to the seventh century, when St Wilfred built one of the very first stone churches in England on the current site of the Ripon Cathedral, and although this original church was all but destroyed two hundred years later in AD 948 by the English king over a dispute with the Arch Bishop of York, the crypt still survived and can be visited in the foundations of the current cathedral today.
Ripon officially became a city in 1836 when the Diocese of Ripon was created even though it has a samller population than most towns. Today Ripon is a very popular tourist attraction with many visitors coming to visit the Cathedral and many other popular places of interest such as The Old Courthouse opposite the Cathedral, Ripon Police & Prison Museum on St. Marygate, and the Ripon Workhouse Museum on Allhallowgate to name three.
Ripon Races is also a very popular day out during the summer attracting large crowds on race days who come to soak up the fun and the atmosphere.
