Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, Devon

One of the most scenic and relaxing ways to get to Dartmouth is to hop on the steam railway that runs every day (several times a day) in the holiday season from the seaside resort of Paignton.

Since the closure of many of the UK’s branch lines in the sixties under the Beaching plan, many small railway lines have been bought up and run under private ownership offering people an insight into how railway travel used to be.

Setting off from Paignton station which is adjoined to the main Network Rail Station, the steam train takes you on a short 30 minute journey along the Devonshire coastline south of Paignton and then through some rolling green hills before following the east side of the River Dart to the estuary at Kingswear. The setting for this short rail journey is magnificent and the last mile along the banks of the River Dart is the most impressive, as you wind along the river bank looking across to Darmouth, and can admire the hundreds of boats anchored in the estuary.

The steam train calls at just four stations, Paignton, Goodrington Sands, Churston and then Kingswear. The fare for the journey is very reasonable and costs just £10 return which includes the £2 charge for crossing the River Dart by ferry both ways. You can also include a leisurely one hour River Dart cruise to the package for an extra £4.75 if you wish.
