Chaumie Waterfall (La Cascade de Chaumie), Haute Provence

la-cascade-de-chaumie

La Cascade de Chaumie is situated high above the Verdon valley about 2 kilometres north of Colmars-les-Alpes and makes for an enjoyable walk up to the bottom of the waterfall. La Cascade de Chaumie is accessible via a short walk of about 45 minutes from the pretty hamlet of Chaumie Basse where there is a small car park. If you prefer a longer walk, then it is possible to set off from Colmars-les-Alpes walking along the west side of the Verdon valley towards Chaumie Basse, joining the route just slightly above the car park.

From this point you follow the road round to the right which is signposted for the waterfall and Chaumie Haute. The road climbs up the side of the hill passing several open fields of wild flowers full of butterflies and crickets. Once at Chaumie Haute, you turn right up a sign-posted footpath into the woods from which point you make a gradual incline on a stony path up towards the waterfall.
I should point out at this point that although the walk is classed as easy, it is not suitable for pushchairs or young children as the pathway is very narrow and quite precarious at certain points along the way. With this in mind I would advise proper walking boots, insect repellent and plenty of water as it can get quite hot along the way as you are directly in the sun. The insects can be a bit of a pain and you will also come across quite a few lizards along the way but they are totally harmless and will do their best to avoid you.

Once at the base of the waterfall you will see a fenced viewing point from which you can admire the waterfall and look down at the Verdon valley below as illustrated in the short video below.
