Café de la Vallée, Thorame Basse, Haute Provence

During our time in the Verdon Valley in Haute Provence, we have stopped at some lovely traditional cafés in all the villages and towns which offer wonderfully simple Provençal cuisine and good value “Plats du Jour” which you can enjoy at your leisure outside in the sun as they all provide facilities for eating outside (something we in the UK are lucky enough to do once a year if the weather is good).
The café at Thorame Basse is a little different and ideal for those that prefer their food a little spicier because the menu offers authentic Vietnamese and Chinese dishes instead. I suppose it is exactly the same as some of the pubs in the UK that have been turned into Chinese and Thai restaurants but it is a little odd to see beef and ginger with egg fried rice been served al fresco in Provence.
Having said that the food looked absolutely delicious and some of the starters consisting of deep fried wontons and salad appeared mouth watering. We did not dine there as we had just had lunch and were just calling in for an ice-cream whilst cycling through.
The menu at Café de la Vallée, Thorame Basse was very impressive with a thirteen euro and sixteen euro set meal available as well as the usual selection of sweet and sour, mushroom, bamboo shoots, curry and ginger dishes all done with the choice of beef, pork, or chicken as well as several other king prawn and duck dishes.
It was a real shame that we had eaten because the Café de la Vallée looked like a nice change and there did not seem to be any complaints from the four tables that were eating, in fact they looked very satisfied with their meals. If you are in the area whether driving through or cycling through and fancy something a little different, then give it a try. There is also a take-away menu as well if you are camping or just fancy eating in.
