Mister Chips, Whitby

A visit to Whitby is not complete without a fish and chip lunch or dinner. Whitby has numerous fish and chip shops but it is wise to choose carefully to ensure you pick a good one. MIster Chips take-away and seafood restaurant comes highly recommended by locals, national newspaper journalists and visitors alike. In fact, Mister Chips has been in the top five finalists for the award of Fish and Chip Shop of the Year for 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 as well as being voted number one fish and chip shop by the Whitby Gazette (what better place to eat that where the locals choose to come!). It has also won awards for its seafood.
Not wanting to join the hoards queuing outside the Magpie Cafe in the pouring rain and thinking that there must be other decent fish and chip shops in Whitby, I stumbled across Mister Chips and was extremely impressed with the service, the surroundings and most importantly, the quality of the food. I have to say this would be my first choice for fish and chips in Whitby and I will be returning there on my next visit to Whitby.
Mister Chips has been recently refurbished so has a smart colourful decor giving it the surroundings of a decent restaurant rather than your usual fish and chip cafe. It is efficiently run and has a queueing system when it's full (under a canopy if it's raining). If you wish to eat traditional fish and chips you can have medium haddock and chips with bread and butter and a pot of tea for just £7.95 which represents good value for money. The haddock was absolutely delicious and the batter tasted really fresh and crispy.
However, Mister Chips is much more than just a fish and chip shop. It has a fairly extensive menu of specials of the day and a la carte dishes (seafood and meat). On the specials board the day I visited was swordfish with garlic mash, seared fresh king scallops, ling with mash and duck with plum sauce. Dishes on the a la carte menu included haddock provencal and salmon. Dishes start at £6.45 and go up to about £12.95 for some of the specials. Mister Chips in Whitby is licensed and has a wine menu.
Mister Chips can be found just around the corner from the Captain Cook Museum (on the Abbey side of the river) at 68 & 69 Church Street, Whitby -see www.misterchipswhitby.co.uk.
