Saltburn by the Sea, Cleveland

saltburn-by-the-sea

Saltburn-by-the-Sea is situated on the east coast just south of Redcar and Middlesborough and is a fine example of a lovely, unspoilt British seaside resort. The town was the brainchild of Henry Pease whose father founded the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

Under his guidance the town began to develop in 1860 and soon the railway opened two years later followed by the Zetland Hotel, Valley Gardens and the cliff hoist and the pier. The cliff hoist was in operation about twelve years before being declared unsafe and replaced by an ingenious tramway that descended down the cliff. The cliff lift is still in existence today and transports thousands of tourists down to the lower promenade every year.

Surfing is incredibly popular at Saltburn, and there is a patrolled section of the coast (clearly marked by flags) near the pier where incidentally dogs are forbidden during the summer months.

The pier has been shortened over the years due to severe weather and a couple of shipping accidents but still offers fantastic views looking north over the sands to Redcar and south towards the cliffs. Saltburn is an extremely enjoyable place to visit with a wonderful beach and if you are looking for a place to eat then the Ship Inn on the Whitby Road is the place to check out.
