Brittany Ferries, Plymouth-Roscoff

The Brittany Ferries crossing from Plymouth to Roscoff is a way to France which takes you directly to the port of Roscoff in Brittany. Despite the proliferation of no-frills flights from Britain to regional airports in France, travelling by ferry is still a popular and attractive option. Once you have added on all the extras the airlines now charge, the ferry can work out to be a cheaper option as well as a more enjoyable and relaxing experience.

Travelling as a foot passenger is an especially cheap way to travel and can be booked easily on the Brittany Ferries website (www.brittanyferries.com). Fares vary according to the time and date of travel - I paid just £46 return in peak season (July/August). The crossing takes six hours but if you consider it to be part of your holiday rather than just a means of travel, you can relax on board and enjoy the experience.

I travelled on the Armorique, a brand new and highly impressive cruise ferry, launched in February 2009. Built in Finland, specifically for this route, it can carry up to 1500 passengers. There are seating areas outside on the decks and various areas inside including comfortable reclining seats, a reading lounge as well as general lounge areas and cabins.

The facilities on board the Armorique include a restaurant, cafe, bar, shops, two cinemas, a children's playroom, games machines and a locked baggage room for foot passengers. On the way over there was wine-tasting, whisky tasting and a magic show for the children,

The restaurant was efficiently run with French chefs and was very reasonably priced. Starters are priced at £3.40, main courses from £5.95 and desserts from £1.95. On the way over I had steak and chips for £6.95, which was very good and a delicious 'tarte a la pomme'. On the return journey I enjoyed a traditional English breakfast for £3.90 - cereals, croissants and pain au chocolat were also available.

Travelling by Brittany Ferries was an enjoyable experience and is ideal for a shortbreak, holiday in Brittany or a point of arrival for travelling further into France.
