Cod and Lobster - Staithes

The Cod and Lobster, Staithes is probably one of the closest pubs to the sea in England as it is situated at the end of the Staithes High Street right on the edge of the harbour wall. As a result of its location, the front of the Cod and Lobster has altered slightly over the years as it has on more than one occasion felt the full brunt of the North Sea. Fortunately a new sea wall was built five years ago around Staithes harbour with the aid of lottery funding which should preserve the front of the pub for a good few more years.

On a sunny day, the Cod and Lobster is the perfect pub to enjoy a beer outside and soak up the seaside atmosphere right by the harbour. Inside the decor is very simple and clean with white painted walls and a blue ceiling. There are also some wonderful old photographs of Staithes on the walls including one above the fireplace which shows the Cod and Lobster being engulfed by a huge wave one particularly rough day. Food is served daily and on the Sunday we visited available from midday until 2.15 p.m. The menu at the Cod and Lobster is very simple with as you'd expect a number of seafood dishes such as scampi, fish lasagne and a choice of haddock dishes. Unfortunately we were slightly late this particular Sunday and all the haddock and chips had gone. However the Whitby whole tail scampi and chips was spot on and good value at £7.95 too.

Whilst the food served at the Cod and Lobster is not going to win awards, it is perfectly edible and very good value, added to that the location of the pub is fantastic and the hand-pulled Black Sheep was also on good form. If you want something a bit more sophisticated on your trip to Staithes and are willing to pay for it, you could always reserve a table at the Endeavour Restaurant up the High Street, but for me, I am happy to pay my eight quid for Scampi and eat in the Cod and Lobster at a table with a sea view.

Basic but worth checking out.

This review is out of date. There are new owners, a fresh redecoration and some very good food at reasonable prices. We ate there in August 2010 and again in July 2011 (numerous times) and found it to be quite good.
