Fairfax Arms - Gilling East, North Yorkshire

Gilling East is a lovely and picturesque North Yorkshire village situated on the York to Helmsley Road. There is a beck that runs down the left hand side of the road as you approach from the south, and The Fairfax Arms is very close to this beck in the centre of the village so you cannot really miss it. There is also some very nice outside beer garden furniture on the banks of the beck so it is perfect when the weather is nice to enjoy a pint and a bite to ear outside.
The Fairfax Arms, is the latest venture of Leeds entrepreneur, Matthew Jones, who has gained a lot of success since opening the Bar 166 and Bistro four years ago and more recently the Sixty Too Bar in Horsforth, Leeds.
The internal décor of the Fairfax is very contemporary but tastefully done with a lovely clean bar area. No expense has been spared and this is highlighted by the Linn loudspeakers behind the bar. Anyone who knows anything about hi-fi will tell you that these are high end pieces of kit and something not to be found in most pubs.
It was a Sunday lunchtime when we visited and there were quite a few people inside enjoying their food which looked fantastic. A quick glance at the menu which was nicely laid out confirmed the wide choice available. The only slight disappointment was that Sunday is the only day sandwiches are not served which was a shame as everything else about this pub was spot on. Not everyone wants a full blown Sunday lunch and I think the Fairfax Arms are missing a trick here. However the Tetley's Bitter was absolutely magnificent and it was a real joy to sit outside the front of the pub and soak up the sunshine.
The Fairfax Arms also provides excellent accommodation with twelve rooms at the back starting from £60 bed and breakfast for a single room and £80 for a double room which I am sure given the pub's location will prove very popular.
The Fairfax Arms is a very smart and well organised pub and certainly lives up to its slogan "Eat, Drink and Sleep" and I will be definititely sampling the food next time we visit.
