Haute Provence and the Verdon Valley, Southern France

Today is the day our two week visit to the Verdon Valley ends as we head back to Lille on the TGV from Aix-en-Provence, a time to reflect on where we have been and what we have seen in this region of France.

The main thing I will remember is the way of life in the South of France and how relaxed everything seems. There is no doubt the climate plays a big part in this and coming from England, it is such a shame that we have to travel so far to enjoy some decent weather. Even though we were about 1000 metres above sea level, the temperature was consistently in the high twenties with a lovely cool breeze blowing through the valley.

In the UK, you constantly have to watch or listen to the weather forecast the night before so that you can decide if it is going to be fine enough to do something the next day. It took about three days in Colmar-les-Alpes where we rented a house (pictured above) before we stopped looking out of the window every morning to see if it was nice day because every day began with a sunny clear blue sky and as a result, the day got off to the best possible start. If only that was the case in the UK where you have cross every part of your body in hope of a nice day.

July 2008 has been particularly wet and miserable in the UK so we are very pleased to have escaped for two weeks, seen the sights of Haute Provence and soaked up some very much needed sun. In an ideal world, the UK would have similar weather to Southern France. Granted Haute Provence has snow for three to four months during the winter, but I think that is a small price to pay for a decent summer that everyone in the UK always craves for.

Oh well.
