Helston, Cornwall

Helston is sometimes known as the gateway to the Lizard Peninsula and is the main town in the area. It was originally a port and this only ceased when the River Cober was silted, however being the main town in the area it was always a popular place with markets being regularly held during medieval times. In some ways very little has changed because if you are on holiday in the Lizard, then Helston will no doubt be the place you come to if you need to do a big shop thanks to the local Tesco supermarket, which is soon to be rebuilt next to the existing one on the outskirts of the town. Not to be outdone, Sainsbury’s have also just built a brand new supermarket which is due to open later this summer.
