Les Marchés Folkloriques, Vevey, Switzerland

Now in its fortieth year, the Les Marchés Folkloriques, Vevey, Switzerland, is the highlight of the town’s summer calendar with a unique Saturday morning local market experience which runs for eight weeks during July, August and September. This year, Les Marchés Folkloriques run from Saturday 11th July to Saturday 5th September and was first staged in 1967.
Les Marchés Folkloriques feature a local market offering local meats, cheeses, olives, fruits, arts and crafts. There is also usually entertainment in the form of a brass band or singers and dancers and the chance to sample some of the local wine growers' offerings in a very sociable atmosphere under the roof of the town hall. During the Les Marchés Folkloriques, you buy a glass of varying sizes from about 6 CHF to 12 CHF and you can then sample as much wine as you like.
Les Marchés Folkloriques has a different design of glass each week and these can become very collectable. On the day we visited Les Marchés Folkloriques in Vevey (Saturday 18th July), the weather was not great and it was pouring with rain. However this did not stop people enjoying themselves and as the brass band played, a large number of people were happy to take shelter under the large roof of the town hall and sample four local Lavaux Valley wines.
All the wines on offer, two white, one red and one rose were all very nice, my personal preference being “La Caille” Gamay du Pays de Vaud which was very tasty and reasonably priced at just over a fiver in the local supermarket.
To sum up, Les Marchés Folkloriques, Vevey, Switzerland is definitely worth investigating if you are in this region of Switzerland in midsummer as it is quite a spectacle.
