Masham

The market town of Masham lies 12 miles from Ripon and has always been renowned for its sheep market and its breweries. There are just a few small shops around the market square but most visitors make a beeline for the traditional sweet shop, Joneva where you will be hard-pushed not to find any of your childhood favourites as it has a vast range of sweets, fudge and even has a deli at the rear with a range of items. Joneva first opened in 1992 and has featured on many television programs such as the "The Two Fat Ladies". Local Helmsley ice-cream is sold from the ice-cream counter and is delicious.
There are two breweries in Masham both originating from the Theakstons family which has successfully brewed beer in Masham for six generations. In 1992 Paul Theakston decided to set up his own brewery and visitor centre, the Black Sheep Brewery and both breweries now co-exist in the town.
Theakstons and Black Sheep Breweries both offer tours of their breweries. On a recent visit to Masham we visited the Black Sheep Brewery's visitor centre and were impressed with the talk and tour of the brewery.
Masham also has an excellent sports facility below the main town by the banks of the River Ure where cricket, tennis, bowls and football is played throughout the year.
