The Alnwick Garden

The Alnwick Garden

Now in its fifth season, much has changed at the Alnwick Garden since I first visited in September 2004 when the garden was very much in its infancy. On the second visit last year, much had changed and it was amazing to see how quickly the Alnwick Garden had matured.

The Alnwick Garden was the brainchild of the Duchess of Northumberland and has proved enormously popular with thousands of visitors making the trip to the Alnwick Garden every year, and you only have to look at the number of cars and coaches across the road from the Alnwick Garden to appreciate how well visited the gardens are.

Even for someone like myself who does not have that big of an interest in gardening, it was incredibly interesting to visit the Poison Garden and be given a guided tour of all harmful the plants being grown. The Water Garden was also very impressive and the sculptors, some of which are pictured below are fascinating. The Walled Garden above the main water feature is also magnificent and the whole afternoon spent at the Alnwick Garden was thoroughly enjoyable and unlike some other places to visit, worth the admission fee.

Since my first visit in 2004, A new restaurant/workshop/visitors centre has also been built which is very impressive and compliments the tree house restaurant nicely. Looking at their website, I also see there are plans to improve the Alnwick Gardens further which is good news as it is always nice to visit these sort of places and see something new.

The Alnwick Garden is open all year round with the exception of Christmas Day and has really re-juvenated the town of Alnwick and firmly put it on the map as one of the most popular places to visit in the north of England.
