The Bay Horse Inn, Terrington

We happened to stop off at Terrington one Sunday whilst training for the 2008 Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. For those in the know, Terrington is the GYBR lunchtime stopping point, so we set off from Easingwold and decided to follow the official route via Crayke, Stillington and Sheriff Hutton which worked out about 14.5 miles in total. It was a lovely Sunday morning when we set off and as it was approaching 1.00 pm once we had struggled up Terrington Hill, so we decided to have a spot of lunch at the Bay Horse Inn, Terrington.

Up until recently, The Bay Horse Inn, Terrington had been a Thai Restaurant but was now cooking a more traditional affair on a Sunday consisting of roast beef, lamb and pork. To be honest when you are cycling, the last thing you want is a great big plateful of Sunday lunch, so the sandwiches seemed a far better option. Almost immediately the roast pork and apricot sauce rolls caught our fancy and it wasn't long before we were tucking into some lovely succulent pork.

There was also a good selection of ales on offer at the Bay Horse Inn, Terrington, and I am growing very fond of the Copper Dragon beers from Skipton that were on offer that day - the pint of "Best Bitter" I had was the perfect compliment to the roast pork and apricot sandwich.

There is a lot of space in the pub when you take into account the restaurant and the conservatory which opens out to the beer garden and it is highly likely we will call in again as there was a very good ploughman's on the menu which I will be trying out next time.

A warm and friendly welcome from the new landlord Rob. We have a new microbrewery on site and we serve our own exciting and tasty beers in this quaint and beautiful village. Sue, our chef, is serving some of the best meals in the area. We pride ourselves on quality and service. We have regular quiz nights on a Tuesday, dominoes Wednesday, games night Thursday, Live Music on Fridays and a fun and friendly Saturday. Sunday Lunch is gorgeous with real Yorkshire Puddings. Come and try us.

What a disapointment!!
We arrived at 7.45 on Saturday night to find the place well...empty! I like old pub charm as much as everyone else but this cham was tired to say the least (as were some of the staff!) We were given menus and lets just say it was like a trip back to 1978! The dishes were very old fashioned and not in a good way either. While there is nothing wrong with reviving some tried and tested classic dishes from an age gone by, you get the feeling here that the skill level in the kitchen is dictating the boring, uninspiring dishes that lack any creativity whatsoever. When the food arrived this was comfirmined to be the case with overcooked, bland food produced from second rate ingredients.
Lets hope that things improve soon, but it looks as if the locals have allready given their verdicts!

Just had lunch at Terrington-the best burger I have ever tasted and the own brewed beer is lovely. Down side- I was driving, oh and the weather of course!

As the landlord of The Bay Horse Inn I find Mr Downing's comments rather confusing. By this I mean that he posted his coments on Jan 27th which was a Tuesday. Sue, our chef, was on holiday from Jan 12th to Jan 28th and we had no food service in this period. I might add that we have just won Camra Country Pub of the Season for Autumn 2009 so we must be doing better than previously mentioned. We have lots of local support and regularly do 50+ meals on friday's, saturday's and sundays. Thanks Jesse you are not the only one who has commented on the burgers, many come back for more every week.

For the last four years my sister and I leave our hectic jobs in Glasgow and we head off for a short holiday, camping for a week at the Lakeside Holiday park at Castle Howard. Altho we have passed the Bay Horse on numerous occasions regretfully we have never paid a visit, possibly for fear of that "tumbleweed moment", but that is until last week. The place was busy and the atmosphere was lively and very comfortable. The bar staff were very friendly and we got to sample the real ales before purchasing (being Scottish we're not used to bitter!) Unfortunately we had already eaten but there were many people sitting down to meals which looked really good. The first heat of the Terrington's Got Talent competition was taking place that night so we stayed and enjoyed the entertainment (I use the term loosely, no offense to the contestants). It was a lovely pub and we will definitely go there again. Everyone, staff and customers were friendly. so if you happen to be in the area, do yourself a favour and pop in and sample some of the real ale!
