The Black Lion Inn, Butterton, Peak District

The Black Lion Inn in the small village of Butterton is a very traditional inn built of stone and situated about a mile and a half from Wetton Mill in the Manifold Valley. With only about 100 people living in the village, a large proportion of whom rely on farming to make a living, it is amazing that the pub survives, and no doubt people walking like ourselves in the surrounding area is a major factor in the pub's longevity. The Black Lion Inn contains a walkers' bar, a pool room, a cosy front room, rear room and a dining room, and has open fires. We stopped for lunch whilst walking along the Manifold Valley and ordered ham and cheese baps with chips and salad (£5.50) and guest ales, a perfect refuelling stop for walkers or cyclists.

The Black Lion Inn offers a warm welcome to passing walkers and visitors and has accommodation for those looking to stay longer. It is just 20 minutes' drive to Alton Towers and on the doorstep of superb walking and cycling in the Peak District. The Black Lion Inn can be included on a circular walk from Hulme End to Wetton Mill by detouring to Butterton and returning via footpaths or country lanes to rejoin the Manifold track.

Are you taking guests over the new year period? Four adults and 14 year old girl.
