The Cott Inn, Dartington

Cott Inn - Dartington

Located about a quarter of a mile from the Dartington Cider Press up a narrow lane can be found the Cott Inn, a very old and authentic Devon pub serving excellent local food. The outside of the Cott Inn has a wonderful thatched roof and on entering the bar area you are treated to magnificent long bar and eating area with a large fire place at top of the room next to the bar.

The menu consists of a set menu with daily blackboard specials. There is wide choice of dishes such as steak and fish, but I would recommend one of the Ploughman’s lunches if you planning to visit the Cott Inn for lunch. Coming from the north of England, the Ploughman’s lunch almost seems to have died a death, but here down in the South West, it is as popular as ever and the wooden platter that arrived on our table would satisfy even the biggest of eaters and offers incredible value for £7.50. There was a selection of cheeses on offer such as stilton and cheddar, honey roast ham or chicken.

For £7.50, you could choose one, or for an extra pound you could have a three on your plate. As I was also having tomato soup, I had no intention of choosing three and in all honesty one cheese is more than enough as the plate was full and consisted of large pickled onions, gherkins, red onion pickle, celery, fresh ciabatta, lettuce, tomato and coleslaw. It was quite frankly, the best ploughman’s I had eaten in ages and reminded me how much I enjoy the dish.

The rest of the food on our table was also very good as was a couple of homemade beef burgers topped with mozzarella in the table opposite which looked equally appetising. The whole experience was excellent and the Cott Inn clearly has a very good chef and an excellent reputation for its food as virtually every table was taken this particular lunch time. The Cott Inn also has seven rooms for bed and breakfast and if you like your pubs traditional, then the Cott Inn, Dartington will not disappoint.
