The Durham Ox, Crayke

The Durham Ox, Crayke

Situated in the village of Crayke, a couple of miles from Easingwold in North Yorkshire, the Durham Ox has been awarded accolades such as Dining Pub of the Year 2008. Keen to discover for ourselves if it lived up to its reputation, we booked for an evening meal and sampled its menu. The interior of the pub is wonderful and creates a really cosy atmosphere, with an enormous roaring fire in the main bar area home to a very relaxed and warm cat. Main courses range from £10.95 to about £18.95, with the option of Chateau Briande to share for £50 and it’s possible to just order a main course or push the boat out a bit as we did and enjoy three courses.

We chose the Rib-Eye steak which came on a wooden platter with salad, a side portion of French fries and bernaise sauce. The meat is sourced from a farm near Mount Grace Priory and is of a very high quality. The Durham Ox recommends the steak be cooked rare due to the fatty nature of the meat, but it was ordered rare and was very tender and tasy. The dessert of chocolate torte with orange sorbet was out of this world!

The cheese menu at the Durham Ox is worth a special mention, and the Berwick Edge supplied by the Doddington Creamery, Wooler in Northumberland was the pick of the cheeses on offer. Made from unpasteurised milk, the cheese is a sophisticated mature Gouda for the connoisseur.

The Durham Ox has cottage accommodation to the rear which can be rented out. The Durham Ox comes highly recommended and is certainly deserving of its many awards.
