The Gold Cup Inn, Low Catton - York

The Gold Cup Inn at Low Catton is probably one of the best examples of a fine country pub offering excellent food on the outskirts of York. The Gold Cup Inn boasts a large dining area and bar area that is characterised by its low beamed ceilings and warm welcome.
Having read about the Gold Cup Inn in the 2009 Good Pub Guide, it seemed a good idea to check it out when visiting friends near Pocklington one Sunday lunch time. The pub has ample car parking plus a Shetland pony and stable at the rear (which will keep the kids occupied). It is obvious on entering the pub, that this is a very well run establishment and clearly the current owners, Ray and Pat Hales take great pride in the food and drink served. Bar meals are served lunchtime and evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday with Sunday lunch served until 5.30 pm.
Beer at the Gold Cup, Low Catton is very well kept and the Theakston's was on particular good form this Sunday. There was a very large selection of food available including a special three course Sunday lunch which was very good value at £11.95. I opted for the Scampi which was equally well priced at £8.95. The service at the Gold Cup, Low Catton was excellent and the young girls that were waiting on tables were extremely polite and organised.
All in all the whole meal was extremely impressive and amazing value considering the final bill came to under £25 including drinks. It was no surprise that the pub was busy on the day we visited and it was easy to see why the pub had been recommended in the 2009 Good Pub Guide.
If you are in the Low Catton and Stamford Bridge area of York, then the Gold Cup Inn seriously warrants a visit.
