On Sunday 27th July, the Huby and Sutton-on-the-Forest Agricultural Show was held in the grounds of Sutton Park, in Sutton-on-the-Forest in North Yorkshire. We went along for a day out in the local area around York, and were pleasantly surprised and impressed with the Agricultural Show which was well-attended and popular with all ages, probably helped by the fact that it was a scorching hot day. Entry was £5 for adults and the parking was free so good value for money.

The Huby and Sutton-on-the-Forest Agricultural Show has been running for 117 years and offers a varied programme of events which includes a horse show, showjumping, livestock classes, a dog show, classic cars, vintage tractors, trade stands, craft fair and fun activities for children. The organisers had obviously gone to great lengths to ensure that there were high quality competitions as well as plenty to do for everyone.

There was a large variety of livestock being judged and plenty of animals of all sizes to look at from rabbits and goats to sheep and bulls. The Shetland ponies were delightful and for those with an equestrian interest there was quality showjumping all day.

The dog show was held in the afternoon and entrants competed in various categories including best rescued dog, local dog and the best biscuit catcher (my favourite)! Having visited Crufts Dog Show in the past and seen all the pedigree dogs, it was enjoyable to see a more informal dog show and the delight of the owners (many of them children) winning rosettes with their pets. There was also a sheep dog demonstration with the trainer using geese and ducks instead of sheep and engaging children from the audience to act as obstacles in the demonstration which proved that training a god takes a great deal of time and energy.

Food and refreshment stands were dotted around and the hog roast stand proved popular (though we pitied its staff standing by an oven in the intense heat of the day). Yorvale ice-cream seemed to have anticipated the large demand and kept visitors plied with delicious ice-cream all day.

A clown kept the little ones entertained whilst the older children attempted to stay on the bucking bronco! There was also clay pigeon shooting in a far corner of the car park field for £5 a go.

The Huby and Sutton-on-the-Forest Agricultural Show comes highly recommended and makes a great day out for everyone.
