The New Inn, Tholthorpe

The area between Boroughbridge and Easingwold seems to have a fine repution for being home to some of best eating pubs around with places such as the Blue Bell Inn, Alne and the Durham Ox, Crayke being two good examples. With that in mind, it is always nice to come across somewhere new that rivals the high standard set by the best pubs in the area, and the New Inn at Tholthorpe is one pub I would definitely add to this list and recommend to people as a suitable place to enjoy high quality food in warm, comfortable and enjoyable surroundings.
The current owner of the New Inn, Tholthorpe is Cameron Reid, who has previously worked as the head chef at the the Durham Ox, Crayke, so if you have eaten at the Durham Ox before, then you know the food should be of a very high quality before you even sit down to eat. The New Inn, Tholthorpe was traditionally quite a small village pub which has been extended at the front and side to form a fairly large establishment. Fortunately all renovation work has been done sensibly without spoiling the atmosphere and décor of the main bar area which is adorned with World War Two photographs of the famous No. 6 Group Royal Canadian Air Force who were staitoned here to which a country kitchen style restaurant has been annexed.
The menu at the The New Inn, Tholthorpe, is varied and very sensibly priced and local produce is used wherever possible with meat being supplied from R Spilman of Helperby and the village butcher, Charles Henly. On the evening we were dining, I ordered poached egg and mushrooms as a starter (£4.95) and gammon and chips (£9.95) as a main course, and both were excellent. There is also an early bird menu offering even greater value for those wanting to eat before 7pm.
The food at the New Inn, Tholthorpe, was first class and the portions were just right as neither of us could manage a dessert. The bill for two including starters, main courses and drinks came to just under £40, and an enjoyable meal was had by us both.
To sum up, it is hard to fault The New Inn, Tholthorpe, and I would have no hesitiation in recommending it as a place to eat and sample fine food.
