The White Horse Inn, Ampleforth

Situated on the main street in Ampleforth just down the road from the White Swan, is the White Horse Inn, a lovely unspoilt more traditional pub in complete comparison to the other pub, the White Swan, which I thought was a bit snooty and full of the "ok ya" type that blight these Yorkshire villages. If you want a decent pint and some good food then the White Horse Inn could be just what you are looking for, if you want to sip pimms and show off your new pink Ralph Lauren pink shirt then go to the White Swan.

Having been told by the staff at the White Swan that they did not do hot beef sandwiches on a Sunday (what pub does not do hot beef sandwiches on a Sunday??) it was necessary to find another hostelry so that I could eat. Fortunately, the White Swan is just up the road and we bumped into the landlord in the car park and he was very polite and immediately I felt more welcomed than I had in the other pub. Clearly the White Swan is a very old pub and it is always nice to drink in a proper village pub with original floors and authentic decor. The Black Sheep was also on very good form and there was lots to choose from on the menu as well as a choice of beef, lamb and pork for Sunday lunch.

However, all I was after was a hot beef sandwich and chips, and this time it was no problem and after about fifteen minutes a big plate arrived consisting of a large baguette generously filled with topside of beef, onions and gravy served with chips and salad which was very good value at £5.25. The beef was delicious and clearly only a quality joint had been used as you could see by the appearance that this was above average for pub grub.

The whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable and you can always tell a proper village pub because nine times out of ten the gents is located at the back in a converted out house.

Highly recommended.

Although the White Horse has now changed hands since the review above was posted,it is still very much a country pub serving good beer and food. Friendly staff and family run. Nikki runs the bar along with local staff while her husband Pete is in the kitchen. It is probably far better than it was when the above visited in 2008. In fact it has more the atmosphere and welcome that we all enjoyed that it did around 10 -15years ago when Jim and Wendy were there. It is great that we still have a locals local as they are few and far between now but also welcome visitors to the area as well. Guests staying with me have always given positive feedback to it.

Very good fish & chips to takeaway are sold by the White Horse at £6.50 (January 2012 price) on a Friday evening, a fair price for this quality of food.
