Thorame Basse and Thorame Haute, Haute Provence

Thorame Basse and Thorame Haute in Haute Provence are two small villages situated on a rich and green fertile stretch of land tucked in between the Verdon and Issole valleys that provide excellent land for agriculture.
Given that both villages lie at almost 1000 metres above sea level, it is unusual to find such a green area especially given the landscape you drive through to reach the pasture from St Andres-les- Alpes.
Both villages are unspoilt and very small, although like so many Provençal villages, Thorame Haute still retains a boulangerie and boucherie (bakers and a butchers shop) and also has a good crêperie.
Located about half-way between the two villages is a very pretty lake, Lac Des Sagnes which looks man-made but is very picturesque and a good starting point for a walk or the perfect place to park the car and take a spot of lunch. Sadly unlike so many other lakes in the area, bathing is prohibited but it is very peaceful and most definitely worth a visit.
Most people driving from St Andre-les-Alpes towards Allos on the D908 will probably drive past the small turning for Thorame Basse and Thorame Haute (the D2) without batting an eyelid, but it is definitely worth investigating and having driven through the two villages, I would recommend people take this minor road (the D2) as an alternative to the more frequented D955/D908 if driving from St Andre-les-Alpes as the road winds through the Issole valley which is very quiet and flat and perfect for the casual cyclist as well. The D2 meets up with the D908 at Thorame-Haute where you can continue your journey towards Allos.
