Whernside Manor Bunk Barn

Whernside Manor bunk barn is situated just outside of the village of Dent, in the grounds of Whernside Manor. It can be hired by small groups of friends or family and is dedicated to a potholer who died and is kept going in his memory. Whernside bunkbarn provides a good base for those keen on the outdoors.
The bunk barn sleeps up to 12 people and camping is permitted in the garden behind the bunk-barn. The sleeping and living area is all one room and could be described as small and basic but cosy. The sleeping area is comprised of wooden platform areas with dividers and the top bunks are reached by climbing up wooden poles with footholds. The bottom bunks have curtains for privacy. You need to bring your own sleeping bags but pillows are provided. The sleeping area was surprisingly comfy with no creaky bunk-beds and long enough for taller people. We all slept well but the fresh air and walking combined with the local ale probably played a part!
The kitchen comprises an oven, hob, fridge and toaster with sufficient cooking pots and utensils to cater for a group. The two tables are pushed together to make a large square dining table with benches and seats around it, ideal for groups eating together. There is one toilet within the bunk barn and a separate shower block with two showers (though just one was working when we stayed). The water in the bunk barn is not suitable for drinking but water can be brought over from the house.
The accommodation is basic and although there is not a great deal of space, it is perfectly adequate for walkers or outdoors enthusiasts who are happy to share with friends. The setting and the beautiful garden and Manor House make it a lovely spot. We really enjoyed our stay there and the owners of the manor were friendly, refilling out water bottles for us when required.
A number of walks start from Whernside Manor (including the Craven Way and the Dales Way) and it is about a 25 minute walk into Dent to reach the pubs in the evening. We loved the Sun Inn, in the heart of the picture postcard village with its cobbled streets.
Whernside bunk barn costs £90 per night for sole use on a weekend or £80 on weekdays, which represents good value for money for groups. Camping is £9 per person. Individuals may be able to stay as well but it s probably best suited to groups.
